The world of Minecraft is quite empty in the vanilla game. This might be fine to some, but to many, this is a problem that needs fixing. A testament to this is the sheer amount of mods that add new creatures to the game. While Mo’ Creatures has long ruled this area, but there are plenty of mods available that do the job well and Animals+ by Click_Me is one of them, so let’s take a look at what it offers…
Table of contents
UPDATE: There’s a new article out featuring mobs added in an update to the mod. Check them all out here, or click on the one that interests you:
Mice are small, passive mobs that spawn in plain and forest biomes. They are ambient mobs which means they will not fight back and don’t drop anything. They are hunted by snakes, and will often die at their (metaphorical, of course) hands.
Snakes are hostile mobs that spawn in swamps, jungles and deserts. They don’t do a lot of damage, but can poison the player. They actively hunt mice in the wild.
Lizards are peaceful mobs that spawn in swamps, jungles and deserts. They don’t do much and just slowly move around the place. Lizards will ignore you (probably because they think they’re way cooler than you).
There are two types of birds in Animals+ – the regular birds that come in six colors, and the ducks. While ducks will only walk around, birds can fly and will often try to sit on trees. Both the ducks and the birds are passive, so their main purpose is ambiance.
Anglers (anglerfish) are hostile underwater mobs that spawn in oceans. They are quite resilient and can do a lot of damage, so be careful when diving to the depths they dwell in. Luckily, their light is functional so you can see their glow from far away.
Manta Rays are peaceful underwater mobs that are larger than fish, but not nearly as big as whales or sharks. They are there to nicely fill the oceans along with the other underwater mobs, adding atmosphere.
Whales are another underwater mob. They are the largest creature in the mod by far, but are nothing to worry about since they are peaceful. They will sometimes dive up onto the surface and often sing their whale songs which nicely liven up the usually dull sounds of the Minecraft ocean.
Penguins are peaceful creatures that spawn in snowy areas. Since penguins are undoubtedly the coolest animal in real life, the penguins in this mod are pretty cool too. They waddle around and squawk like the adorable little rascals they are.
Regular fish are just that – regular fish. They are simple and peaceful creatures that spawn in any decently sized body of water. They can be killed for fish meat and suffocate on dry land. Among the regular fish there are also piranhas, recognizable by their angler-like teeth. They are hostile and attack on sight. They don’t deal a lot of damage, but often spawn in groups so be careful.
Finally, there are insects. If anybody asked for them, well, here you go. There’s butterflies, moths, centipedes and crickets. They all spawn in grassy areas and are passive. Crickets run away from the player and chirp, while moths are drawn to torches.
And there you have it – all of Animals+ (so far). The mod focuses a lot on ambient mobs that successfully fill the world but don’t alter gameplay very much. This mod is perfect for those who want more animals to populate their world, but don’t like Mo’ Creatures change of gameplay since it adds tons of new enemies. It is also a nice alternative and a decent mod on its own. The creator plans to expand the mod to also include blocks and items (which will then be titled “More Nature”), so we’re looking forward to seeing what he has up his sleeves.
