We’ve previously covered magic mods, but Ars Magica 2 is a different beast. The mod adds huge amounts of new content and mechanics that shake gameplay up nicely. In this article we’ll help you get started with the mod.

Before you get started, you need to install the mod. Luckily, the installation process is not that complicated and is more or less the same as with most Forge mods. Here’s how you do it:
- Install the Forge API.
- Run Minecraft at least once.
- Download the Ars Magica 2 mod right here!
- Put the mod’s .zip file in the mods folder located in your .minecraft folder.
- For any additional info, head to our big Mod Installation Guide.
- Ready to go! Enjoy.
You should be able to run the mod alongside most other mods as long as there aren’t any ID conflicts. Isn’t Forge just wonderful?
Now that you’ve got it all setup, it’s time to launch the game and start a new world. This is important because using the mod on an old world could cause problems. Once the world loads, you’ll be greeted with some new HUD elements.
You can ignore that for now, as the mod does a pretty good job explaining it through the in-game compendium, but we’ll get to that later. You can play the game normally without many changes before engaging in magic. Once you actually do want to start exploring the world of magic, you’ll need to find a pool of liquid essence, which is a water-like liquid with a very light blue color. It should be 2×2. Next to it, build a pillar of 2 plank blocks and place an item frame facing the pool. In the frame, put a regular old book. This will initiate the process of creating the Arcane Compendium. It should look something like this:
Instead of a boring old book, the item frame will now hold a brand new Arcane Compendium! It’s a great book, that one. It’s basically a very neatly arranged and designed tutorial that slowly introduces you to the mod and everything it holds. This is where I leave you. Anything I could write in a guide would be a clunkier alternative to the beautiful and fantastic Arcane Compendium, and would only serve to ruin the magic of exploring the various mechanics of the mod yourself.
I will say that I enjoyed my time with the mod. It offers most of the things you’d expect from a magic mod – lots of spells and new enemies and mechanics that give you stuff to do in the usually boring end-game. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
