The idea of floating iruins was always really, really cool. This idea originally became reality through modder , but when he stopped updating the mod, modder took over to keep the amazing idea alive. This fantastic mod adds floating islands with ruins (mini-dungeons, basically) on top. Besides looking cool, they also provide challenge and have a nice use. Read on for the details…
The mod ties into world generation and basically “rips” blocks from the ground and lifts them in the air to create an island. Then it just places a ruin/mini dungeon on top. This means there’s a crater left below the island which is dark and ripe for mob spawning. Because it “rips” blocks from the ground, it means that islands are biome-specific (even the ruins on top!), which is a very nice detail.
The ruin on top of the island has a protected mob spawner inside. The spawners are naturally not always the same, so some ruin will have creepers while another will have spiders, depending on the island. It provides a nice challenge, and makes the island not such easy prey.
I also found a nice use for the islands. Because of their location, the spawners inside ruins are perfect for grinders. Some could see this as “unbalanced” and that is understandable, but since mob grinders have more or less become necessary for a lot of end-game stuff, I welcome the added convenience.
There’s not much more to say about Floating Ruins. It does a small and a simple idea that adds a nice touch to world generation and I highly recommend it. You can get it here:
