If you’re like me, you’re always rummaging through the inventory screen trying to keep everything organized and your hotbar fully utilized. In that case, prepare to be even more indecisive with Inventory Pets – a mod that adds animated pet creatures with unique and powerful abilities to your inventory. Read on for the details…
Inventory Pets are implemented as items in the game, meaning they aren’t actual creatures that follow you around, but are actually new items with cute animated icons and a hunger bar implemented using durability. Each pet has unique powers and a unique food they like. They will slowly get more hungry (durability drops) as you use them and will automatically consume their food of choice if you have it in your inventory. If you run out of food and their hunger bar depletes, their powers will deactivate.
There’s currently 42 inventory pets in the mod, divided into two categories:
- Regular pets – obtainable through crafting with differing resource cost depending on the power of the pet.
- Legendary pets – obtainable only through that pets’ specific dungeon that spawns in the world.
I’m not going to list all the pets in this article, as that would be redundant since the creator of the mod already has a so-called “Pet-O-Pedia” with detailed powers and recipes in the mod’s forum thread. The same information, sans the recipes, is available as a tooltip on each individual pet in-game. I will say that the pets are diverse and unique, and are lots of fun to use.
The gameplay implications of Inventory Pets are fascinating and very fun. Deciding what you put in your hotbar slots is more important than ever and feels like selecting a tactical loadout for your next challenge. The pets powers’ often provide convenient solutions to otherwise annoying problems, for example the squid pet which provides better underwater vision, faster swimming, and unlimited underwater breathing, making undersea exploration much easier.
There’s not much more to say without delving too deep into what each pet does. All I can say is that this is a fantastic and unique mod that you should definitely get. While it is limited in scope and won’t really drastically change the game, it does provide new things to work towards and makes things easier. The simple nature also allows it to be of an extremely high quality – all the pets are visually recognizable and consistent, yet can fit in with most texture packs as well as vanilla, and even have cute animations that add to their charm.
