MapWriter – An Open Source Minimap!

There used to be a lot of minimap mods on the market during the good old beta times, but since that number has dropped significantly, which is why it’s good to see modder mapwriter bring a new one to the fray, the equally named MapWriter. It sports a lot of options including the option to export a map file directly while in-game. Let’s  zoom in…

The mapping tool itself is very impressive. There are options for texture size and support for texture packs and custom blocks, making it a nice addition to a modding collection.  It of course works with single and multiplayer, and the map can be viewed at any time by pressing M, making it more than just a minimap mod since the entire world is visible. The map is very easy to use with zoom features and dragging to move around. Using a button press will make a PNG file of the entire map ready for sharing with friends!

The minimap, while simple in design, sports an impressive list of features. You can customize the zoom level using Page Up/Down on your keyboard, you can set it to be a rotating circular map (making it a map/compass mix some people are used to) and it even has multiple modes for useful stuff like showing nearby air/water/lava for underground exploration and your approximate overworld location while in the Nether.

It’s simple, but effective. The features it has may be considered “cheating” by some players, but in that way it’s no different than any other minimap mod. Unless you’re serious about navigating the hardcore compass and sun location way, the mod will prove useful and even encourages exploration since it pushes you to go to areas you haven’t been to yet.
