The beloved and very famous Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shaders (SEUS, for short) Mod has been updated to version 10.0 and supports Minecraft 1.5.2. After months and months of release candidates, this official update, done in collaboration with karyonix’s modified shaders mod, offers better stability and performance as well as polished up effects. Read on for pretty, oh so pretty screenshots.
Always one of the most beautiful parts of a new shader update and certainly a big focus of each update is terrain during daylight. It’s something you’ll be most commonly seeing during gameplay. Luckily the good old dynamic shadows are here to make that part stunning, and they’re smoother than ever and very polished since a lot of the bugs you might have encountered before have been removed. In this version the godrays and lens flares don’t make a comeback (sorry, J.J.), but they are replaced with the more stable bloom-like system. It’s not as magical, but is more realistic and glitches out way less. It also allows nicely simulates how adjusting to light for that nice overwhelming light effect when exiting caves or water.
The new water shader steals the show with way better reflections than before and it’s even more flexible with camera angles removing those awkward “the water is invisible” shots that used to plague SEUS. The waves are a little less prominent, but still visible enough for that realistic look. The new water even looks good at night, which is a welcome sight.
Speaking of night, the moonlight is back and ready to amaze. Though it has been toned down a bit for this version, it will still look great in an open area while keeping it dark in forests creating a nice balance. Shadows are subtle, but noticeable here and along with the new glow effect on spider eyes, make for a gorgeous night vista.
But it’s not just pretty new effects in this update as it brings better performance than ever and a very stable build with an amazingly low amount of bugs (though there still are some). Mid-range gaming computers should have no problems pulling the standard version of the shaders on Normal at a decent frame rate, though if you want to play on Far with the Ultra DOF version (depth of field is bloody fabulous after all), you’re gonna have to live with a smaller framerate, though still playable for most people. Here’s the performance on my mid range PC (HD 7850 + i5 3570K if you know your PCs) running the game at full HD in windowed mode. You can push it a few FPS higher if you play fullscreen:
This edition of the shaders impresses as always and offers decent performance and stability to a mod that has struggled with those until now. I highly recommend this if you are a fan of pretty sights and have decent gaming rig. I recommend using your texture pack of choice for best results (I used Sphax’ PureBDCraft). You can get it here:

- Ensure that you are using the correct version of Minecraft. The correct version of Minecraft to be used with this mod is in the filename. For example: ShadersMod-2.00-mc1.5.2-ofud3.zip.
- Download the correct version of OptiFine indicated in the filename. “ofud3” means “OptiFine Ultra D3”. You may have to look in the “Older Versions”.
- Open minecraft.jar.
- Delete the folder META-INF
- Drag the contents of OptiFine first into minecraft.jar and confirm.
- Drag the contents of the Shaders Mod into minecraft.jar and confirm.
- In your .minecraft folder create a new folder called “shaderpacks” (no caps, no spaces, just like that).
- Copy the downloaded SEUS files into the shaderpacks folder, it should look something like this: .minecraft/shaderpacks/SEUS v10.0 Ultra.zip/shaders/[.fsh and .vsh shader files here]
- Play the game, go to Options then Shaders then pick the shader you downloaded.
