Sonic Ether is back with Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shaders V10.2! Almost exactly a year after our last look at Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shaders (aka. SEUS), the famous shader programmer has released a new preview that showcases the improvements made. A new global illumination lighting system is the main focus here, providing even more realistic lighting. Let’s take a look…

… and the best way to take a look is to actually look at pictures, no? So let’s start.

I chose this picture as the first one because it shows clearly what global illumination is, even for someone completely unfamiliar with graphical effects. What global illumination does, in essence, is calculate light bouncing off of things, instead of just calculating how a light source will hit that one particular object. So, as you can see in the top part of the picture, the colored light from that wool wall is bouncing off onto the white wall, making the effect clear. And here, you can see that effect in a more practical uses. Aside from the blinding brightness difference, you can tell that the shadows are softer – less jagged.

Here we can see the slightly altered water for v10.2 – it is less shiny and has a bit of a shade of green in it instead of just being ocean blue.

Next, we come to the mandatory night screenshot. Here nothing is changed except that the torch gives a bit of color to the blocks around it and the scene is generally darker in v10.2.

Finally, Sonic Ether has mentioned that he’s going to work on the volumetric clouds teased back in v10.1 to make them more stable and enable them in the default shaders (presumably without blowing up our PCs), AND is working on “volume light aka. true godrays”, so the next release of SEUS should be one for the books.

If you want to try it out yourself, you can – just keep in mind that this is a preview and as such isn’t as stable as a full release version, which in itself isn’t very stable either. The powerful PC requirement stands too.

Installation instructions:

  1. Install the Forge API.
  2. Run Minecraft at least once.
  3. Download the shaders mod here.
  4. Put the mods .jar file in the mods folder located in your .minecraft folder.
  5. For any additional info, head to our big Mod Installation Guide.
  6. Now take the SEUS .zip file and copy it over to the “shaderpacks” folder in your .minecraft folder (make on if it isn’t there).
  7. Ready to go! Just enable the shaderpack via the in-game menu. Enjoy.
