It is a period of civil war. Modder spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have obtained the secret plans to a secret weapon that would revolutionize Minecraft – the STAR WARS MOD. As republic and CIS forces wage war, the modder forces realize they have set the secret STAR WARS MOD weapon in the wrong Star Wars movie trilogy…
It’s been too long since I’ve seen a mod that adds lightsabers to a game. It’s really the first thing modders seem to do when given the opportunity to mod a game, isn’t it? And Minecraft was no exception, though lightsabers alone were not enough to recreate the Star Wars feel (as George Lucas and the cast and crew of the prequel trilogy have learned). Luckily, modder AXELTOPOLINO has created a whole mod that includes a lot more than just lightsabers. Let’s take a look…
The main feature of the Star Wars mod is probably the faction system. There are five factions in the mod, all unique and interesting: Jedi, Sith, Hunter, Droid and Clone. The player selects his faction via a simple menu accessed by default using V on the keyboard. Your faction affects special powers, who will attack you and who won’t, what your HUD looks like and so forth. Before picking a faction everyone will just be passive towards you.
Jedi and Sith are pretty straightforward – they get lightsabers and force powers like force jumping and lightsaber throws. The rest of the factions all focus on blasters (guns) and really only differ in their alignment, so being a clone will make droids attack you and vice versa. Jedi and Clones are friendly. Sith and droids are friendly. Bounty hunters are somewhere in between. Throughout the world, you’ll see these factions battling it out when they are randomly spawned next to each other.
There isn’t much of a progression system, you can’t really enjoy the content before you have a proper weapon, and once you have a proper weapon, there isn’t much more to craft. Hopefully the addition of planet travel (to be added soon) will mend this by tiering new gear and weapons throughout the planets. Combat is quite good. Lightsabers can reflect lasers if timed right which makes combat very tense. Both you and your enemies can take a lot of hits, and there are parries involved, so battles don’t end in a few seconds. This makes combat dynamic and just pure fun. Luckily, there are plenty of enemies around to fight.
There are, however, many weaknesses that I must address (alongside the fact that the mod is set in the wrong trilogy). First of all, the HUD is quite bad, displaying irrelevant information that could easily have been put in a menu elsewhere. Secondly, the sci-fi setting just doesn’t fit well with Minecraft. It’s cool for a while, but it not something that would work well alongside your regular mod setup or enhance your regular Minecraft experience. Finally, the mod just feels clumsy. There’s not a lot of info online about it and there isn’t really much of a point to anything yet. Sure the combat is cool, but I would have liked to see more.
Overall, while it has its fair share of flaws, you shouldn’t dismiss this mod if you’re a fan of Star Wars. There isn’t anything here for people just looking to make Minecraft better, but there is some entertainment to be found for fans of Star Wars looking for a fun way to kill a few hours killing droids and fighting sith.
