Wild Caves 3 - Immersive and realistic caves

For a game about mining, Minecraft's mining can sure be dull at times. While this has been addressed in many other mods, Wild Caves tries to improve your mining experience in a different way…

… by making caves more immersive and realistic through new (mostly) decorative blocks like for example stalagmites and stalactites. If you don't know what those are, they're stone shapes on the ceiling/floor of a cave formed by the water. They manage to make caves a bit more claustrophobic and their presence turns an otherwise boring square cave into a mistery waiting to be discover. It's fascinating how such a simple thing can affect the game so much.

The mod doesn't stop there, and decides to further add to immersion by making the cave decorations biome-specific. So in a cold biome there'll be icicles, sandstone formations in deserts or lots of vines in a swamp biome. It basically makes exploring caves in different biomes a unique experience. Except for the stone formations, the mod also adds a new type of mushroom to your caves - a glowing one. These vary in shape and size, but all have a faint glow and drop glowstone dust. I felt that they helped keep caves eerie as their distant light showed me that there was more empty space in the darkness ahead instead of just a wall.

Wild Caves 3 also adds a bunch of smaller features like mob heads in caves or spiderwebs in caves outside of mineshafts. This along with support for biomes added by mods is a winning combination for me. While it is very simple, Wild Caves 3 accomplishes a lot to make your mining experience more immersive. I recommend it wholeheartedly. You can get it here:
