Minecarts in Minecraft are one of the main transportation methods (especially prior to the addition of horses), but aren't used for much else. That is, until modder Vswe took matters to his own hands with Steve's Carts 2 - a huge cart overhaul mod that adds a cart creation system with lots of modules to combine into carts. Let's take a look.
The mod adds tons of new items and block all with the purpose of improving the minecart system. The main focus of it is creating your own custom carts instead of using the regular Minecraft minecart. You mix and match modules like drills, chests, solar panels, turrets, seats and more.
To make these awesome custom carts, you need to use a new crafting block the mod adds called a Cart Assembler. It is crafted from some iron, stone and simple PCB, which in turn is made from redstone, gold and iron, making it an expensive device. Once built though, you can use it to make as many carts as you need.
Once you've built and placed the Cart Assembler, you can use it to make your cart. The interface is split into a few parts. The top left is where your hull goes (the basic part of a cart that determines slots for modules). Below that are several categories where modules go. In the middle is a big black box with a preview of your future cart. Right below is your inventory, and on the right there's information about the cart you're making with the fuel slots in the bottom right corner.
Once you place your hull, it'll tell you information about it in the information tab. This will also open up the 5 module categories (engine, tool, attachment, storage, addon) allowing you to place a number of modules in each category (the exact number relies on your hull). You'll notice that as you build the cart, the preview in the middle will display the new modules. Once you're done, pop some fuel in the bottom right corner and let it assemble. After some time (depends on how complicated the cart is), you'll have a brand new fancy cart!
The modules you can add onto carts are numerous. There are lots of hulls that act like basically tiers (more slots for modules). Several kinds of tools can be produced and there are different kinds of engines, some solar some old-fashioned. The attachment, addon and storage categories are filled with tons of cool stuff you can try it. There's a list of all the modules here, if you want to check it out.
Besides the modules you can add onto carts, the mod also adds some new blocks, mostly to help with building the rail system to support your advanced new carts. This includes junction and advanced detector rails, tons of detector blocks and even a Cargo Manager block to transfer between chests and carts. It's all very nice and complex.
Overall, I liked this mod a lot. The complexity of it astounds me and even though my cart building skills are that of a potato and I could never dream of building the amazing complex systems that this mod allows, I can appreciate what it means for people more talented than me. Used with Buildcraft, this mod could allow some truly breathtaking machinery. You can get it here:
