Minecraft - The Horse Update (1.6) has been released!

After a long wait and lots of snapshots Minecraft has been updated to 1.6, The Horse Update. As you might tell by the name, this update focuses on a new mod - the horse. There's tons of stuff added with this update, both related and unrelated to horses. From horse armor to colored clay and even a new launcher, read on for the details…

Here's a full feature list, courtesy of Mojang:

  • Added Horses
  • Added Donkeys, Mules
  • Added Horse Armor
  • Added Leads
  • Added Carpets
  • Added Hardened Clay, Stained Clay
  • Added Block of Coal
  • Added Name Tags (item)
  • Added Hay Bales
  • Texture packs are now “resource packs” that also can hold sound etc
  • Food meter is now drained when healed by full food meter
  • Removed Herobrine

So let's get the big guns out of the way first - the horse mob. The new mob spawns in plains and can be tamed, then bred and/or mounted. A wild stallion is tamed by breaking it, which is done by right clicking to mount the horse a couple of times until it stops throwing you off and has a hearts particle animation like when wolves are tamed. The horse can then be bred like regular animal, you just need to use a golden apple instead of hay. Right clicking a tamed horse will bring up it's inventory, along with a saddle and armor slot. There's also a new item, the lead, which can be used to lead mobs (duhdoy) or tie them to fences. That's the short version, but for more on horses be sure to visit our Snapshot News article which analyzed them further.

Moving on, another lead feature of the update are the new decorative blocks, namely colored clay and carpet. Clay blocks can now be smelted into hardened clay, which in turn can be colored with any of the dyes featured in the game, like wool. Colored clay is less colorful than its wool counterpart, but has it's uses in architecture. Carpet on the other hand is crafted using two wool blocks of any color, so it is also compatible with every dye. Another new decorative features is the long requested block of coal, though it can also be used to more effectively store all that coal you just couldn't leave behind while mining even though you already had plenty at home.

The final lead feature would be changes to some behind the scenes stuff, more precisely the new launcher and the change to resource packs. The new launcher has some cool new features like managing multiple .jar files, a development console and more. Most importantly, FINALLY allowing you to download old Minecraft versions. It's about damn time. The resource packs are a replacement for the old texture pack system, allowing more than just textures to be replaced. This is the first step toward the Modding API that's been in-development since the Bukkit team joined Mojang a long, long time ago last year.

Those are the lead new features, but there is, like always, a ton of new bugfixes you may or may notice, and, like always, there will be a new update (most likely 1.6.2) fixing all the new bugs the update added soon.

The update is available now and will be downloaded the next time you start the game (unless you stop it), but you can find out more and get the new launcher here:
