Minecon 2015 - Minecraft Story Mode trailer!

The first day of Minecon 2015 in London started with a bang as Mojang and Telltale Games debuted the first trailer for Minecraft Story Mode - the previously announced episodic adventure that will show us an unofficial telling of the story of Minecraft's blocky world. Video and details within…

Some backstory for those unfamiliar with Minecraft Story Mode - it is being developed by Telltale Games, famous for their work on episodic game series like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among us, and recently, Tales of the Bordlerlands and Game of Thrones. Their games feature a blend of quick-time sequences and conversation-driven story where the player makes choices that impact the flow, and ultimately, the ending of the game.

Minecraft Story mode will be their less serious foray into Minecraft waters intended to provide a story set in the world of Minecraft that isn't necessarily Steve's story or even canon in the overall Minecraft universe. The first episode should hit this year on Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android-based devices.

Here's the trailer:

As you can see in the trailer, the story doesn't seem to include Steve at all, and will instead feature a diverse cast of characters original to Minecraft Story Mode. There seems to be a world already built, so this isn't a lonely origin story, but seems to be an fun adventurous romp set in a largely built-out world of cubes. For anyone hoping for a serious and eerie adventure exploring an empty mysterious world this may come as a disappointment, but the direction the game is taking shouldn't surprise anyone as Minecraft's audience consists of a large number of younger fans for whom a more upbeat style is more fitting.

In addition to the trailer, a cast has been announced, featuring some well-known actors:

  • Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, WordGirl)
  • Brian Posehn (Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Surf's Up)
  • Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us, Tales from the Borderlands)
  • Scott Porter (Batman: Arkham Knight, Speed Racer)
  • Martha Plimpton (The Goonies, The Good Wife)
  • Dave Fennoy (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us)
  • Corey Feldman (The Goonies, Stand By Me)
  • Billy West (Futurama, Adventure Time)
  • Paul Reubens (Pee-wee's Big Adventure, The Nightmare Before Christmas)

Finally the locations featured in the trailer seem to be very diverse - from a sprawling city to a dusty old library and finally into the Nether, we'll hopefully be greeted by a cube-trotting story.

We'll keep you posted on more Minecon news, as well as all things Minecraft, so stay tuned for more awesome stuff.
