Thaumaturgy… which giveth certain order to make strange works, of the sense to be perceived and of men greatly to be wondered at. - Mathematicall Praeface to Euclid's Elements (1570), John Dee
This is how modder Azanor introduces his extremely popular Thaumcraft mod that dabbles in magical abilites, alchemy and more foul sorcery. It's a very big and complex mod, but we'll get you started. Read on to learn more about it…
First off, a disclaimer: Thaumcraft is a very large mod with tons of content that you could write about for articles upon articles. Since the mod focuses a lot on exploration and discovery, and even has a built-in guide in the form of an in-game book, I won't go further than the basics in this showcase. I'll show you the basic mechanics and how to get started, the rest is up to you. So, let us begin.
The very first thing you'll need to do when you want to get into thaumaturgy is craft a wand. Craft two iron caps, then craft a wand with those caps, and you've got yourself your first wand. Wands are the basic tool for magic - you'll use them to activate the basic utility blocks, collect magical energy in the world and more. When you have a wand equipped, a HUD element will appear in the top left corner indicating the amount of magical energy (or vis, for short) you have stored in it. You can find nodes of vis randomly generated in the world, then right click them with your wand to absorb their power and charge your wand. You will later be able to use vis in all manners of magical purposes.
Now that you've got the wand basics down, you'll need a Thaumonomicon, the encyclopedia for all things magical (pretty much everything the mod adds). Right click a bookcase with your wand and you'll get one. Now right-click anywhere with the book in-hand, and it will open. The Thaumonomicon contains all the information you could possibly need, and more. This is why it can get a bit confusing to use, but once you get into the mod and start learning about the mechanics it'll get easier. If you find something you don't understand, just look it up in the Thaumonomicon and you'll get all the info you need.
Time to equip yourself with some basic utility blocks. You should start by crafting some tables by putting a row of wooden slabs onto two plank blocks. Simply place a table anywhere in the world and right click it with your wand to create an Arcane Workbench. This will be the place to create magical equipment, including more powerful wands.
Next, use some scribing tools (crafted using a glass bottle, ink and a feater) to create a research table. Simply right click 2 connected tables with the scribing tools. The Research Table will be the center of your further discovery of magic. You'll use it to find out new ways to use magic and more.
Now that you're all setup with the basic utility blocks, it's time to go mining. The mod adds some new ores, the important ones right now being the Infused Ore variants. There are 6 Infused Ore variants, one for each primal element (water, fire, earth, air, entropy and order). You'll need to find one of each and mine them for the crystals inside. These will be useful in a moment.
… and that moment is now! Once you have all the primal element crystals get some gold and glass and craft a Thaumometer (6 crystals on the sides, glass block in the middle with the golden ingots on top and bottom). The Thaumometer not only looks awesome but is also crucial to discovering the world of magic. It'll let you scan blocks, mobs and more to determine their magical properties, including potential vis. It'll also make it way easier to see the vis nodes you need to charge your wand and more.
You have your wand and the basic utility blocks. Your Thaumonomicon and Thaumometer are in hand, and you're ready to explore. The foundations are here, now you need to go out and explore. Find fragments of knowledge, harvest vis sources, craft new and exciting items, and continue your magical adventure. If you ever feel lost just refer to your Thaumonomicon and you'll find all the info you need. You're ready to perform miracles and create magic yourself.
